Antioxidant.


Treatment of JB6 P+ cells with peonidin inhibited TPA-induced COX-2 expression, and also decreased TPA-induced neoplastic transformation and blocked TPA-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) in the cells. The inhibition of the signaling mechanism regulating the activation of ERKs strongly suggests that peonidin exhibits chemopreventive as well as anti-inflammatory activities.


Peonidin has show potent inhibitory and apoptotic effects on cancer cells in vitro, notably metastatic human breast cancer cells. A very large question, however, has been raised about anthocyanidins' penetration and retention in human cells in vivo, due to their rapid elimination from the human body.


The higher levels of peonidin in fresh fruit corresponds to the rule of thumb that more natural fruit is healthier.
