Geniposide was found to induce increased activity of phase II detoxifying enzymes, inhibit tumor promotion, and induce apoptosis in rat C6 glioma cells.

Geniposide can be transformed to blue pigments by a simple modification. The stability of the blue pigments against heat, light, and pH was studied to examine the blue dye for possible use as a value-added food colorant. Thermal degradation reactions at temperatures of 60−90 °C were carried out at different pH levels within the range 5.0−9.0.

Geniposide from Gardenia jasminoides protected neuronal cells from damage in oxygen and glucose deprivation-exposed hippocampal slice culture. Geniposide showed a greater protective effect on the granule cell layer than on the pyramidal cell layer including CA 1 and CA 3. On the basis of the experimental results, geniposide may be a therapeutic agent for ischemia in patients.
