| Applications | Dihydroartemisinin is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin and is widely used as an intermediate in the preparation of other artemisinin-derived antimalarial drugs. It is sold commercially in combination with piperaquine and has been shown to be equivalent to artemether/lumefantrine. Dihydroartemisinin, its methyl ether (artemether), its ehyl ether (its (arteether) and its hemisuccinate ester (artesunate) are known as more effective than its parent material - artemisinin. It is recommended as the first-line anti-malarial drug with low toxicity. Dihydroartemisinin has been shown to possess promising anticancer activities and induce cancer cell death through apoptotic pathways. It is also a drug used to treat malaria. |
